Lesson 5.4 Using Excel to Create a Graph
Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to create a simple graph using Excel, interpret the data represented in the graph, and understand the basic concepts of graphing.
Be Inspired: What is a graph and why do we use them? What are the different types of graphs? How do you input data into Excel to create a graph?
Check It Out: Have a look at this graph. Can you identify the different parts of the graph, such as the axes, data points, legend and labels.
Do Your Best: Graphs are a useful way of representing data visually. Using your own data create a graph in Excel. Can you customize the appearance of the graph. Make sure you include titles, labels and colours.
Extension Task: For those of you wanting an extra challenge have a go at creating additional graphs using different types of data or a different style of graph (e.g., bar graph instead of a line graph). You can also experiment with different features in Excel to enhance the appearance of their graphs.
Finally: Ask students to share their graphs with the class and explain what the data represents. Encourage peer feedback and discussion about the different types of graphs used and the information conveyed. Review the key concepts learned during the lesson and address any remaining questions or misconceptions.
